'THE BLUES SCALE'

A book for the beginner and those who want more from the blues scale.

Ever tried to play a blues using the blues scale?

Tricky stuff with just six notes!

The book introduces a major blues scale, so that along with the regular minor blues scale, we've doubled the number of available notes. Each of the two scales is allocated certain chords to focus and improvise on. The book explains the process of improvisation with the use of 'cells'- groups of two or three notes which are easily combined to form short phrases. You're creating your own improvisation , so there's no need to memorise other people's licks.

The second book is :

A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO IMPROVISATION: Fom the Diatonic to the Chromatic
For the Intermediate Player.

I've tried to make the book an easy read and practical. It's full of examples. There is some theory, enough to back up arguments in favour of this or that scale/chord change/chord sequence. The book consist of transcriptions of notes that I've kept over the years, but really focuses on my more recent deliberations on the choice of alternative minor, major and dominant scales. My partiality for these alternate scale/chords has changed my playing from a purely diatonic style and has opened the door to a new world of chromaticism. In the process I've doubled the available scale/chord choices giving me greater scope and versatility. Really!

MORE ABOUT 'A Practical Guide to Improvisation':

This book is for any musician who wants to improve his/her improvisational technique. It's aimed at the intermediate player wishing to get out of 'straight' playing and explore the several alternative 'tension' scales waiting to be discovered. There's a really thorough analysis and appraisal of diminished scales and patterns, a step by step evaluation of alternative minor, dominant and major scales and lots more including the use of pentatonics, tritones and mode extraction. Sounds complicated, but all is explained with easy to remember graphic formulas and over 400 practical eaxamples in a relaxed style. The great thing is that, except for the diminished scales, there are no new scales to learn, enabling the player to add a new dimension to his/her technique virtually overnight (another miracle!). This book gives an insight into what many intermediate players are doing during a performance and is a good starting point for more advanced explorations. The book is wire bound, 187 pages, A4.

BEBOP ELEMENTS.

For those who want to add a little 'ba ba re-be-bop' to their swing style !

There are certain elements of bebop which are quite striking: those unfinished phrases, for instance and those flighty triplets. If you're at a stage in your playing, like I am, where a little inspiration wouldn't go amiss, then some bebop tricks of the trade may be the answer.

BEBOP ELEMENTS

The notes in this book are the result of my attempt to update my own tired swing style. So what's wrong with swing, you ask. I love swing music but ever so often I want to leave the safe confines of the swing style and venture out a bit, borrow a few ideas from here and there in order to recharge my own playing, give it a bit of an edge . If you're reading this book, then, I can only guess that you're ready for an injection of 'ba ba re bop'. On the other hand, you may find bebop fascinating enough to study further. This book will, I hope, serve as a useful introduction. 102 pages.
